How to define an equipment requirement before asking for a price

The information needed to compare options suited to the intended use, terrain and budget.

01

Start with the work to be done

A machine name is not enough. State the task, material, expected output, frequency of use and site environment.

Two assets in the same category may have very different capacities, dimensions and operating costs.

02

Minimum information

  • intended use and expected result;
  • terrain, access and site conditions;
  • useful capacity, power or dimensions;
  • duration and desired start date;
  • purchase, rental or an open choice;
  • location and indicative budget.
03

Compare beyond price

A cheaper option may cost more if it requires complex transport, repairs, hard-to-source parts or unnecessary capacity.

04

Before commitment

  • confirm current availability;
  • identify the owner or authorised representative;
  • check relevant specifications;
  • separate asset, inspection, transport and third-party costs.
